The Life of Winnifred Pearl Sutherland

1947 December - 2022 November

Created by Chas one year ago
Winnifred ‘Win’ was born on Friday the 12th of December 1947 to Joan & James Ferrie, at in the Parlour of 99 Hearson Road Ramsgate. She was the middle daughter of three daughters, her eldest sibling Janice and youngest Christine.

She went to St Ethelbert’s and Holicondane School, which she hated both of them!
When Win was just 15years old she met, her beloved Kenny Sutherland at Roller Skating in Dreamland, Margate. Win didn’t like Ken at first and only agreed to go out with him as he wouldn’t stop pestering her. From that point on they engaged on a romance that would last 55yrs. Marry on the 14th October 1967, until Kenny passed away in 2017 just 5 months short of their 50th Anniversary.
Initially Win and Ken started their married life in Margate, before moving to Telham Avenue, in 1975 were raised her cherished family at ‘Wins Crib’ for 47 years.

The home Win had created was always full, be it Chas & Maxine, or her no.1 granddaughter Shamiller or her no.1 grandsons Chaz and James (jimmy), her Nieces and Nephews. To her sister Christine as she battled cancer. Win’s crib was a home of love, a lot of swearing but somewhere you knew you were safe and be feed.
Win had a variety of jobs, throughout her life, from working at a factory, to working on a farm to cleaner. But her main job which she cherished the most was the Matriarch of the family. She was everyone’s mum and confident be it her only family, or to family friends.

Kenny and Win had their first child Chas in 1971 and followed in 1973 a daughter Maxine.

Win was very proud of her two children, taking them around country for their roller skating, sewing sequins all over their costumes.

Chas being first born, earned the name golden boy and everyday would call Win to check what daft things she been up to and they would talk for hours, no matter where he was in the world. She was so proud of his achievements from joining the Royal Navy as a paramedic and then his transition into the offshore world as a Medic initially then as HSE Advisor and settling with his family in Thailand.

Maxine, Win’s daughter there are no words of how proud she was off Maxine. The pride she had of how she opened her business, her family values, the way she had become a pillar in the community especially to the younger generation. Win and her daughter were truly inseparable, with Maxine seeing her everyday where both were each other’s rock. Win would always ask Maxine what she would like for dinner on a Friday, her face would say it all if she didn’t like it.

Win could not have been happier when Maxine, married Phill. Maxine’s swears, Win liked Phill more than her. Phill was always looking after her, be it from decorating, cleaning, cooking, or ironing.

When Chas married Em, Win would spend every year in Thailand. Were Em, would take here everywhere showing her every conceivable tourist site in Thailand. To ensuring she was pampered like the queen she was, be it from massages to facials or just being spoilt.

Win clearly had her Son-in-law and daughter-in-law wrapped round her little finger, she adored them both. Phill and Em both saw Win only as ‘mum’ and not a battle axe mother-in-law.

She was a Nanny to 3 wonderful grandchildren, Shamiller, Chaz and Jimmy, which she was so proud of. The whole of QEQM medical staff knew of them, as she would brag how handsome the boys were and the beauty of her granddaughter.  When Shamiller and Michael started their life away together in Cambridge she was sad but so happy for them. When they got their house and she was so excited to hear their wedding plans. She will be in their hearts on their wedding day.

Jimmy would send videos or live stream, his wakeboarding, Thai Boxing, Skateboarding, drumming, beat boy, football and the list goes on. Win would show everyone with a beaming smile on her face and her obvious pride to all.

Chaz was her boxer; she was immensely proud of his achievements and would tell all that would listen of just how well he was doing. Travelling around the country, be it Penrith, Essex, Bristol, to Hull and most recently in Devon. Where Win was treated as a queen, given ringside seats with everyone running around after her as the tournaments Mum to all.

She loved to travel the world and treasured her holidays especially with her kids.
When we say travel, she would have given Judith Chalmers a run for her money. Be it holidays, in the Caribbean, Thailand or Europe she just loved to travel and meet new people. She especially loved her annual trips to Thailand, to see Chas, Em and Jimmy. Where she was everyone’s mum again.

A lot of these holidays was also spent with her bestie Mags her friend of 70yrs. The two of them together used to cause mayhem wherever they went be it, dancing on the bars, staying out to 3 or 4 in morning, to peeing outside a taxi to dropping speakers in a lift when they were pickled. To have a friendship that Mags & Win had, was something truly precious.

Unfortunately Win spent the last few months in out of hospital as she battled, with COPD and Cancer; spending more time in a hospital bed than her own bed/’Sofa’ as she was a bugger for going to bed. During this time she would always be asking for cakes / sweets, giving Maxine a merry dance, but Maxine would of not had no other way.

During the last few days of her special life,  Winnifred was surrounded by Chas, Maxine, Phill, Shamiller, Chaz, Isaac, Zoe, Mags, Cheryl, Pam and Summer by her bedside. The video calls with Em and Jimmy in Thailand and Michael in Cambridge.
Whereas usual she made us laugh, smile, and treated us all to, two new phones, a laptop and a pair glasses, by the way these were returned to the rightful owners in the next hospital bed. We all were blessed to have in our lives.

Lastly if Win was here now, she would say her favourite phrase to you all, ‘If I was you’
Win/Mum/Nanny will be so sorely missed not only by Chas, Maxine, Em, Phill, Shamiller, Chaz, James, Isaac, Michael, Mags and Summer; but all her who knew her.
